PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can suppress the occurrence of winding habits on a belt used for the image forming apparatus and can easily impart tension to the belt. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 is equipped with a belt unit 5 attachable and detachable to and from a unit 2. The belt unit 5 is equipped with a tension roller 7B for imparting the tension to the belt 5 and the belt 6 and an elastic body 10 set in such a manner that the tension roller 7B can be energized in a tension impartation direction T1. An operation means 12 is formed in the main part 2 for putting the elastic body 10 into the energized state. On shipment of the image forming apparatus 1 from the factory, tension is allowed not to be imparted to the belt 6. When an operator operates the operation means 12 in starting to use, the tension roller B is energized by the elastic body 10 of the belt unit 5, in a state of being assembled to the main unit 2. The required tension is readily imparted to the belt 6, and the occurrence of the winding habit of the belt 6 is suppressed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
