PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a method of operating a drive unit including an engine and a transmission with variable transmission ratio in which actual target output variable of the drive device is determined from desired output for reducing fuel consumption and reducing brake wear when the same is used in an automobile. SOLUTION: In the method of operating the drive unit 19 determining the actual target output variable 46 of the drive unit 19 from desired output 48, the drive 19 includes the engine 12 and the transmission including the variable transmission.
