PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording/reproducing device having a large recording density and a high transfer rate which raises a small deterioration in a probe chip and long life of the device, in the recording/reproducing device for recording/reproducing information by the contact of an energized probe. SOLUTION: A multitude of probe chips at the tip of a cantilever are arranged to form a multi-chip. The cantilever is made into a beam supported at both the ends. The multi-chip is disposed at the center of the beam and arranged so that recording/reproducing parts of the multi-chip correspond to recording dot parts one-to-one. The surface for forming the multi-chip is moved up and down by suction force so as to be moved parallel to the surface of a recording medium, and is brought into contact with the recording dots. It is energized after the contact so that the recording is performed. Thus, the R/W of a large amount of data can be performed at a time, and the data transfer rate can be improved. The scanning distance by the probe can be reduced, by performing the R/W by the multi-chip, when compared with a single chip. Because the radius of curvature of the tip part of the chip is as large as 50 nm or more, and because it is moved in the state parallel to the surface of the recording medium, the contact can be performed not by the point contact but in the form close to the plane contact.
