PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a rear projection type display apparatus thinner in shape with a simple constitution. SOLUTION: The optical system is provided with a transmission type screen 20 for adjusting the direction of incident light, and also, diffusing the incident light, a projector 12 for projecting image light, a convex mirror 60 for reflecting the image light so that the image light may be enlarged in the vertical direction of the screen, and a linear fresnel lens 80 for refracting the image light in the vertical direction of the screen so that the distortion of the enlarged and reflected image light may be corrected, and the image light projected from the projector 12 is made incident on the convex mirror 60 and reflected, thereafter, made incident on the linear fresnel lens 80 and refracted, and then, made incident on the transmission type screen 20.
