PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method for an image display device and an image display device for implementing the method, more specifically, a display device having a matrix of cells which are arranged in rows and columns, and are made operative and inoperative by a write voltage, a row driving circuit for sequentially selecting the rows of the cells, a column driving circuit having a plurality of switches and applying a write signal via the plurality of the switches to the rows of the cells operated for the selected rows, and a resonance circuit for generating the write signal, in such a manner that the switching operation loss in the circuits can be reduced down to zero regardless of the capacity of the switched columns. SOLUTION: The processing to optimize the above method is performed in such a manner that the control of a column amplifier reduces the energy loss down to the zero during the switching operation of the plurality of switches of the column driving circuit. To the end, the processing to position the start of the deflection period of the resonance circuit, some of which depends on the capacity of the columns of the cells coupled to the resonance circuit, via the column driving circuit is so performed that the switching operation of the plurality of switches takes place at all times when the voltage supplied by the column amplifier is zero.
