Even when a data area and a spare area are assured in advance in a recording medium, alternation processing to the alternation area is performed only when recording into the data area is disabled, thereby effectively utilizing the recording area. The recording medium has a data area and a spare area. The data area has at least one unit area to each of which an address is assigned. The recording device includes a processing unit for specifying the address of the unit area in the data area and a control unit for recording data in the unit area of the specified address. The processing unit judges whether data is recorded in the unit area of thefirst address and specifies the first address or the second address in the same data area according to the judgment result. When recording of data into the specified address has failed, the control unit records the data in the spare area.
