Accurate calibration of recording power is carried out without exceeding the rated output value of a laser diode even if the recording speed is increased and high recording power is required. An information recording device records information on an information recording medium such as a DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW by applying a laser beam onto the information recording medium. A pickup has a laser light source such as a laser diode (LD). A light-receiving section for detecting the amount of light by receiving the laser beam emitted from the laser light source such as an FMD is provided. Depending on the power of the laser beam detected by the light-receiving section, the power of the laser beam emitted from the laser light source is controlled. Before the actual information recording, a trial emission is carried out during the calibration to determine an adequate recording power, and the emission duty of the laser beam is controlled within the range not exceeding the rated output value of the laser light source. Therefore, even if the laser beam power is increased in trial emission for especially high-speed recording, the trial emission can be stably carried out in trial emission within the range of the rated output value of the laser diode constituting the laser light source.
