LOW PROFILE ELECTRIC SANDER

A "low profile" power tool, wherein a user can grasp the top (105) of the tool with a hand positioned close to the bottom of the tool. The tool uses a motor having a diameter to lamination height ratio of at least 2:1. The motor may be an electronically commutated "pancake" style motor and the tool may be a random orbital sander or an orbital sander having a motor that provides at least 40 watts of power. The sander (100) may have a brake that brake that brakes an orbital mechanism (104) which brakes the motor. The tool may have a controller which changes the speed of the motor from idle to a sanding speed upon the speed dropping from idle to an idle speed threshold value and changes the speed of the speed of the motor from sanding speed to idle upon the speed increasing from sanding speed to a sanding speed threshold value.
