The invention relates to a novel method for severing and finishing optical waveguides (1, 2, 3) and to a device therefor. The inventive device makes it possible, according to the inventive method, to remove, before the severing process, the insulation (3) up to the cladding (2) at at least one location by a rotating blade or milling cutter (4), and to subsequently sever the optical waveguide (1, 2) in a single processing step. The optical waveguide ends (11) are then polished. To this end, the optical waveguides are held by moving jaws (8, 9) of a clamping device (8, 9) that are supported on the shoulders of the optical waveguide insulation. The stripped location is wide enough so that the cutting edge of the saw blade having a diamond coating (7) does not touch the insulation. The subsequent precise stripping for using the optical waveguide ends in ferrules while at a distance from the optical waveguide ensues either with blades (10), which puncture the insulation (3) while stripping the insulation by a transversal motion, or by split clamping jaws (8, 8', 9, 9'), which strip the insulation by a transversal motion after, in the first step, another position of the insulation (3) has been exposed up to the cladding (2) by a rotating blade (4) or milling cutter (4). |
