PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an out-of-focus state in an animated image and to decrease flicker disturbance in an image display apparatus having hold type electro-optical conversion characteristics represented by a liquid crystal display. SOLUTION: The image display apparatus includes a liquid crystal panel 5 for modulating light on the basis of a picture signal and a lamp 8i for illuminating the liquid crystal panel 5. The lamp 8i illuminates the liquid crystal panel 5 with light as a mixture of a pulse component i which is emitted once per one frame of the picture signal and a pulse component h which is emitted at the frequency higher than the frame frequency.
