PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an intermediate transfer unit which restrains the curling habit of an intermediate transfer belt during storage and has a simple configuration. SOLUTION: The intermediate transfer unit includes an intermediate transfer belt which is elastic in its lengthwise direction, rotated in a fixed direction, and on which a toner image formed on a photoreceptor is transferred; and a plurality of tension support members for tensely supporting the intermediate transfer belt. At least one of the tension support means is a position altering tension member for putting the intermediate transfer belt into a first position, where the belt is supported less tensely than that in the period of image formation and a second position, where the belt is supported tensely in the period of image formation.
