An aminoanthraquinone or a derivative thereof is acylated with the acid or acid halide of a dinitrodiaryldisulphide-dicarboxylic acid wherein the nitro groups are in o-position to the -S-S- linkage in presence of an agent facilitating acylation and reducing the disulphide obtained to the corresponding o-aminomercaptan and treating this with a halogen acetic acid to give an o-aminothioglycollic acid. The dyes are applied as in Specification 377,740. Suitable aminoanthraquinones are those mentioned in Specification 2702/09, [Class 2 (iii)], and suitable acylating agents are 2.2<1>-dinitro-4.4<1>-dicarboxydiphenyldisulphide, 2 . 2<1> - dinitro - 5 . 5<1> - dicarboxydiphenyldisulphide, 2.2<1>-dinitro-5.5<1>-diethoxy-4.4<1> -dicarboxydiphenyldisulphide, and 2.2<1>-dinitro-6.6<1>-dicarboxydiphenyldisulphide. In examples: (1) 2.2<1>-dinitro-4.4<1>-dicarboxydiphenyldisulphide is converted to the carboxylic acid chloride, the product condensed with a - aminoanthraquinone, reduced with hydrosulphite and condensed with sodium thioglycollate, finally being oxidized by means of peroxide; wool is dyed orange-yellow shades which change to fast yellow on lactamisation; the a -aminoantraquinone may be replaced by 1 - amino - 4 - methoxyanthraquinone (orange-scarlet shades on lactamisation), 1-amino-4-hydroxyanthraquinone (similar shades), 1-amino-5-methoxyanthraquinone (yellow shades on lactamisation), 1-amino-5-chloroanthraquinone (yellow shades on lactamisation) and 1-amino-4-methylaminoanthraquinone (reddish-blue shades on lactamisation); (2) similarly to (1) 2.2<1>-dinitro-6.6<1>-dicarboxydiphenyldisulphide may be condensed with a -aminoanthraquinone, reduced and converted to a dye which yields similar shades on lactamisation; using 1-amino-4-methoxyanthraquinone instead, bright scarlet shades are obtained on lactamisation. The dinitrodiaryldisulphidedicarboxylic acids may be obtained by reacting an appropriate halogennitrobenzoic acid with an alkali sulphide, polysulphide, thiocyanate or xanthate and if necessary oxidizing, or hydrolysing and oxidizing the products; or an appropriate diazotized nitroaminobenzoic acid is treated with an alkali disulphide, and if necessary the product hydrolysed and oxidized. |
