A device for cleaning paint and other surface coatings from a paintbrush or other applicator (10) comprises a container (13) for receving the portion of the applicator to be 5 cleaned and means (41-47) for bubbling gas or air through a liquid or solvent contained within the container. The bubbles agitate the surface of the applicator, thereby facilitating cleaning. The device is particularly suited to cleaning paintbrushes because the bubbles penetrate and separate the bristles and also create a flow of liquid around the bristles. A method of using the device is also disclosed.
