Coronary artery calcification is quantified from a CT scan image by identifying a calcified region 51, and estimating the partial calcium content for each pixel within the region using expectation maximisation of a statistical model of the calcified and background material 52. The result is a map of the partial calcium content within the calcified region, which can be further processed 55,56 to calculate the mass of calcium within the region. The method shows lower inter-scan variation than known techniques.
|
