Tool units (WE1-WEn) each have holding devices (3-1 to 3-n) and devices (PBE1-PBEn) to determine the position of each tool unit along a retaining rail (4), on which the tool units are suspended. Control units (ST1-STn) adjust machining parameter settings according to detected tool unit positions. The retaining rail can integrate conductor and data rails to avoid trailing power and communications cables. An independent claim is also included for a tool unit for a machining system for machining work pieces on a production line.
