PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of driving a solid-state imaging element which can suppress read-out voltage, and also to provide a solid-state imaging device. SOLUTION: The solid-state imaging element comprises light receivers 1 and a charge transfer section 2. In at least transfer electrodes 11 and 14 of the charge transfer section 2 which also serve as read-out electrodes for reading out signal charge, the width of an effective region which contributes to signal charge transfer is wider on the signal charge read-out side than on the opposite side. By applying transfer pulses of six phases to six transfer electrodes 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 corresponding to the two light receiving sections 1 adjacent to the charge transfer section 2 in the charger transferring direction respectively, signal charges are transferred to the solid-state imaging element by six-phase driving. The solid-state imaging device comprises the solid-state imaging element, and a voltage application means for applying voltage to the transfer electrodes. By applying transfer pulses of six phases to the six transfer electrodes 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 by the voltage application means, signal transfer by six-phase driving is carried out.
