PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation method and an operation device for an internal combustion engine for diagnosing a slide type internal air circulation valve of a compressor in an air feeding pipe of the internal combustion engine without requiring an air mass gage in the air feeding pipe for it. SOLUTION: In this operation method for the internal combustion engine, difference in pressure passing through a constituent element 5 of the air feeding pipe 10 into the internal combustion engine 1 is measured, and error is sensed when detecting difference in pressure having pulsation property. This operation device for the internal combustion engine is provided with a pressure difference sensor 55 for measuring difference in pressure passing through the constituent element 5 of the air feeding pipe 10 into the internal combustion engine 1 and a detection means 140 for sensing error when detecting difference in pressure having pulsation property.
