The line has two application robots (3, 5) for application of coating medium e.g. base coat, on an application object e.g. motor vehicle body, and two handling robots (4,6) for handling the application object. Two linear guides (1, 2) are moveable along the application and handling robots. Each of the two linear guides is provided to guide one of the application robots and one of the handling robots. An independent claim is also included for an operating method for a coating unit e.g. paint-spray line.
