PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize energy saving by turning off a light source at reading disusing time. SOLUTION: Whether or not the platen cover of a platen placing an original is closed is determined, according to whether the reading level of each pixel obtained, by scanning and acquiring the original presser surface of the platen cover is more than a threshold (ST1). If "a cover close" is detected, a timer T is started (ST2, ST3). When the time of the timer T is up and if T hours pass from the "cover close" detection (ST4, ST5), the light source is turned off (ST6). When a key stroke occurs during counting of the timer T or if it becomes the state ("cover open") that it is not the "cover close", the timer T is reset (ST7, ST8), and the light source is turned on (ST9).
