PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a linear polyphenylene ether imparting high heat resistance to a polyester resin, an epoxy resin, etc., by introduction thereinto and having hydroxy groups having reactivity at the terminals and a narrow molecular weight distribution. SOLUTION: The method for producing the polyphenylene ether is characterized as follows. An alkali metal salt (a1) of 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl ether is reacted with a 4,4'-dihalogenated diphenyl ether (a2) in the presence of a transition metal catalyst (X) in an organic solvent (Y).
