PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon material for electric double-layer capacitor electrodes with a small amount of decrease in capacitance retention, and also to provide a method for manufacturing the carbon material.

SOLUTION: The carbon material for electric double-layer capacitor electrodes is obtained by activating coke in atmosphere containing organic gas (low-class alcohol gas or low-class alcohol organic acid ester gas). In the manufacturing method of the carbon material, the coke is activated in atmosphere containing organic gas (low-class alcohol gas or low-class alcohol organic acid ester gas).
