<p>A fabric elastic in the directions of both its warp and weft, e.g. a nylon knit, is bonded to a sheet of cellular rubber by a method comprising coating a preferably slit or scraped face of the cellular rubber with a rubber solution, allowing the solvent to evaporate, applying said fabric to the thus coated surface and pressing, optionally at an elevated temperature, to soften the coating and effect a permanent bond. The method may be employed in the manufacture of insulating garments whereby a garment made of a material elastic in the directions of both warp and weft, and which may be laid flat without creasing, is covered on each side with a cellular rubber sheet coated as above, and bonded thereto by hot pressing to obtain the arrangement of Fig. 2, not shown, where the back portion adheres only to sheet 1a and the front portion to sheet 1b, and where beyond the marginal folds of the garment 2 the sheets 1a and 1b are bonded directly to each other. To obtain the finished garment the bonded assembly is cut out around line 3 (Figs. 1 and 2). Optionally, the outer surfaces of the sheets of rubber may also be covered with the fabric.</p> |
