PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of preventing the deviation of a reading start position in reading an image, and provide an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: A scanner part 50a to which the invention is applied receives a requirement of reading an original from a CPU 105, and reads the variable density of the original existing in the movable range of a carriage by moving the carriage arranged at a home position in a subscanning direction along the original. The home position is set to a position at a prescribed distance from a home position sensor. When starting reading the original, the carriage is moved by the prescribed distance and starts reading the image at the point of time when it reaches the reading start position, so that the deviation of the original reading position is prevented.
