PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially suitable method for the production of 5-(4-tetraydropyranyl)hydantoin in high yield by a simple and safe method (without using a cyanogen compound). SOLUTION: The method for the production of 5-(4-tetrahydropyranyl)hydantoin contains (A) the 1st step to react a 5-dialkylphosphonohydantoin with tetrahydropyran-4-one in the presence of a base in a solvent to form 5-(4-tetrahydropyranylidene)hydantoin and (B) the 2nd step to reduce the 5-(4-tetrahydropyranylidene)hydantoin and obtain 5-(4-tetrahydropyranyl)hydantoin.
