The invention relates to a method which is used to determine the authenticity of materials. A marker substance is added to the material which is to be marked, said marker substance containing oxygen isotop ¹⁸O^{in a concentration which is different from the naturally occurring concentration. The marker substance is re-isolated during the determination of the authenticity and the content of 18Ois determined. Said content of 18Ois compared to the content of the original and as a result, authenticity of the material is determined.}
