The indicator (1) has a display field (3) and a light source (2), whereby the display field can be illuminated by the light source. The display field contains a color change material (5) that can change color and/or transmissivity depending on the duration of the illumination by the light source. The light source is suitable for emitting monochromatic light. An independent claim is also included a method of indicating operating hours, especially for a vehicle.
