Required torque (TQT) and actual engine torque (TQA) are obtained, and then shortfall torque (TQS) is obtained by deducting the actual torque (TQA) from the required torque (TQT) (TQS = TQT - TQA). When the shortfall torque (TQS) is greater than a permissible limit value (LMTTQ), a fuel injection valve injects auxiliary fuel (Qv) in an expansion stroke after main fuel is supplied, increasing discharge energy flowing into a turbocharger. On the other hand, when the shortfall torque (TQS) is smaller than a permissible limit value (LMTTQ), the supply of the auxiliary fuel (Qv) is stopped regardless of an accelerator pedal depression amount (ACC). |
