The mat is provided such that when a ball or the like impacts with it it provides a visual indication of the location (8,9) of impact of the ball. The mat has a core (1) of a dampening material selected to absorb energy, and a cover layer (5) connected to the core and arranged to display the impact spot. The cover layer comprises a base material (6) and textile fibers (7) embedded in the base material. These extend outwards beyond a surface of the base material furthest from the core and a shadow effect is created due to the way the fibers lie after the impact of the ball.
