<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably take measures against failure of an opening/closing body displacement detecting means for detecting falling movement of an opening/closing body such as a slide door, due to its self weight from an intermediate suspended state. <P>SOLUTION: There is provided a method of controlling the opening/closing body for a vehicle. According to the method, an electromagnetic clutch is arranged between a motor having a worm mechanism on a drive shaft, and the slide door. When a predetermined time period has elapsed since a time point of intermediate halting of the slide door, before setting the electromagnetic clutch in a non-excitation mode in order to prevent depletion of a battery, the slide door is moved through a predetermined distance in an opening direction, and displacement of the slide door is detected by a displacement sensor. If the displacement is not detected, it is determined that the displacement sensor undergoes a failure, and therefore the electromagnetic clutch is continuously kept in an excitation mode. In this manner suitable measures corresponding to the type of failure can be taken. For example, by issuing a failure alarm or by inhibiting non-excitation of the electromagnetic clutch to continue mechanical connection between the slide door and the motor, even when the vehicle is stopped on a slope, fall of the slide door due to its self weight caused by clutch disconnection can be prevented. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
