PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which is superior in productivity and can be manufactured at a low cost, has a high output even when combined with GMR head reproduction, has low noise and a high S/N, and is superior in high-density characteristics and the stability of recording. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is provided with a magnetic layer having a hexagonal ferrite dispersed in a binder on a nonmagnetic support material and has a signal of a 0.1 to 0.3μm recording wavelength recorded thereon. The magnetization reversal volume is 3×10<SP>-18</SP>to 10×10<SP>-18</SP>ml, and perpendicular demagnetization after DC magnetization in a perpendicular direction and preservation at 60°C for 24 hours which is given by a formula: perpendicular demagnetization = residual magnetic flux density after preservation (Br) / residual magnetic flux density before preservation (Br) is≤3.
