PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preparation process of a low baking cost for a composite nitride phosphor in a powdered form with a high emission intensity. SOLUTION: The preparation process of a composite nitride phosphor containing a small amount of oxygen of formula (I), M<SP>1</SP><SB>a</SB>M<SP>2</SP><SB>b</SB>M<SP>3</SP><SB>c</SB>M<SP>4</SP><SB>d</SB>N<SB>e</SB>O<SB>f</SB>: (I), (0.00001≤a≤0.15, 0.5≤b≤2, 0.5≤c≤2, 0.5≤d≤2, 1.5≤e≤6, 0<f≤1.2, 0<f/(e+f)≤0.2), which comprises baking a powder of mixed raw materials containing a monomer and/or a compound of an activated element M<SP>1</SP>, a nitride of a divalent metal M<SP>2</SP>, a nitride of a trivalent metal M<SP>3</SP>and a nitride of a tetravalent metal M<SP>4</SP>. The powder of mixed raw materials is set to have the bulk density of≥0.05 g/cm<SP>3</SP>to≤1 g/cm<SP>3</SP>. The baking temperature of at least 1,200°C to 1,750°C. The total molar number of oxygen set to be present in the non-baked raw material is≥1% to≤20% for the total molar number of nitrogen and oxygen in the non-baked raw material.
