PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly safe cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity inhibitor which little produces side effects and is useful for selectively inhibiting COX-2 activity. SOLUTION: The COX-2 activity inhibitor contains astaxanthin and/or its ester. The COX-2 activity inhibitor is useful for treating various diseases in which COX-2 participates. Since the COX-2 activity inhibitor does substantially not inhibit COX-1 activity, possibility for producing side effects by the inhibition of the COX-1 activity is low, and the COX-2 activity inhibitor is highly useful for treating various diseases such as inflammatory diseases, allergic diseases, thrombosis, cerebral disorders, cancers, life style-related diseases, and cardiovascular diseases.
