<p>An exhaust emission control device (10) mounted on an automobile, comprising an engine (20), a manifold (22) connected to the engine (20) and allowing exhaust gases produced by the combustion of a fuel to flow therein, and a casing (26) connected to the manifold (22) and holding a honeycomb filter (30) carrying an exhaust emission control catalyst. In the exhaust emission control device (10), the honeycomb filter (30) is disposed in the casing so that the length of an exhaust gas route between the upstream-most part of the manifold (22) for flowing the exhaust gases therein and the tip part of the honeycomb filter (30) is within 1 m. The honeycomb filter (30) has a porosity of 70% or higher, is formed by stacking plate-like members, in which a plurality of through-holes are formed, in the longitudinal direction so that the through-holes are allowed to communicate with each other, and is alternately sealed at both ends of the through-holes allowed to communicate with each other. The honeycomb filter (30) may be formed of inorganic fibers (ceramic fibers or metallic fibers) or inorganic foam (ceramic foam or metallic foam).</p> |
