An automotive exhaust gas catalytic converter has a sintered metal filter substrate that is separated from the catalytic coating by an intermediate wash-coat layer of aluminum oxide and silicone dioxide nano-particles. 5-20% of the particles are aluminum oxide and the remainder are largely silicone dioxide particles. The catalytic agent is platinum, palladium, rhodium, cerium, lanthanum, or a mixture of these. The sintered metal substrate is made from one or more strips of punctured sheet metal, whose punctures are packed with sintered metal powder.
