<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of suppressing a distortion of an image due to spiral exposure in a simple structure without lowering a recording speed, and a method of forming an image. <P>SOLUTION: In this method of forming an image, an image is formed on a sheet-like recording material such that the sheet-like recording material held on an outer face of a cylindrical drum is exposed to a multi-light source having a plurality of channels by moving the drum in the axial sub-scanning direction by rotating the drum. The channels are arranged such that an interval of the light sources in the sub-scanning direction is equal to "n" pixels of which the number "n" is an integer multiple of a pixel pitch. The spiral exposure is carried out by means of the multi-light source by rotating the drum "n" times, and then the multi-light source is moved to the next exposure position during the one time of rotation of the drum.
