<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an instantaneous type heat pump water heater without a hot water storage tank having a short hot water supply build up time. <P>SOLUTION: The heat pump water heater is provided with a heat pump circuit 30, a water/refrigerant heat exchanger 2 heating water by a refrigerant of the heat pump circuit 30, a water supply pipe 2c communicating a water supply source with a water supply port of the water/refrigerant heat exchanger 2, a hot water supply pipe 2d communicating a hot water outlet port of the water/refrigerant heat exchanger 2 with a hot water supply opening, a preheating water circulation circuit comprised by circulating hot water heated by guiding water drawn out from the hot water supply pipe 2d by a circulating pump 15 through a water opening and closing valve 14 to the water/refrigerant heat exchanger 2 through the water supply pipe 2c, a flow regulating valve 10 regulating flow rate of the water flowing through the preheating water circulation circuit, and a control means for controlling the heat pump circuit 30, the circulating pump 15, the flow regulating valve 10, and the water opening and closing valve 14.
