<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable engine start by a battery under vehicle stop condition even under electric power shortage condition where the battery is not charged to crank the engine. <P>SOLUTION: If it is determined that battery charged electric power is less than engine start possibility determination value Pb in S6, operation of a parking brake is commanded and release of an engine clutch E/C is commanded in S7. Then, motor generators MG1, MG2 are started in S8, rotation speed Nmg1, Nmg2 of MG1, MG2 are increased to generate torque Tmg1, Tmg2 in a direction for cranking the engine by inertia generated by rotation of MG1, MG2 in S9. Although rotation elements relating to the engine rotate forward, engine speed is kept 0 since E/C is released in S7. If it is determined that Tmg1≥Te and Tmg2≥Te in S10, E/C is engaged and engine is cranked in S11.
