PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheath material for a plastic optical fiber (POF), the material having excellent mechanical strength even at high temperature, in particular, which can be suitably used when a POF is disposed at high temperature such as for an automobile LAN or a semiconductor sensor in food industry. SOLUTION: The sheath material comprises a copolymer having a specified lactone compound unit (A) and a fluoroalkyl (meth)acrylate unit (B) and showing 1.410 to 1.495 refractive index by sodium D-line at 23°C: the lactone compound unit (A) has substituents R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>having a methylene group in anαposition and independently a hydrogen atom, methyl group or ethyl group in aβposition and having the total carbon number of 1 to 3; and the fluoroalkyl (meth)acrylate unit (B) is expressed by CH<SB>2</SB>=CX-COO(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>(CF<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>Y, wherein X represents a hydrogen atom or fluorine atom or methyl group, Y represents a hydrogen atom or fluorine atom, m represents 1 or 2, and n represents an integer 1 to 12.
