PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating a heavy oil capable of liberating vanadium included in the heavy oil from the heavy oil, when the heavy oil is modified with a subcritical water. SOLUTION: The method for treating the heavy oil is characterized by separating vanadium by reacting the heavy oil containing vanadium with water in a subcritical state, and removing the separated vanadium by a scavenger. Alternatively, the heavy oil treating apparatus is characterized by that a reactor 5 for reacting the heavy oil containing vanadium with water in the subcritical state, and a vanadium scavenging unit 9 in which the vanadium scavenger 10 is brought into contact with the treated substance discharged from the reactor, thereby removing the vanadium contained in the treated substance, are equipped.
