PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem wherein the operation of automatic focus control is unstable so that the correct focusing position is wrongly determined, even when automatic focus data changes caused by camera shake is detected, or the moving speed of the focusing lens are increased. SOLUTION: In synchronization with a vertical synchronization signal, a photographic condition determining computing unit 14 using signal comparison receives, as an input, automatic focus data A from an automatic focus block 5 and automatic focus data B from a camera shake frequency band removal filter 16. In synchronization with the vertical synchronization signal, the computing unit calculates a difference value (A-B), and measures three parameters: the magnitude of the difference value, the sign of the difference value, and the length of the time that difference values with the same sign continue. When it is determined, based on the measurement values, that there is possibility that the camera might have been shaken, a lens movement direction/speed computing unit 15 generates an automatic focus control signal that limits the operation of automatic focus control exerted, based on the computing result of a mountain-climb operation unit 13.
