PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically generate digest information even without depending on user operation in a recording and reproducing device and method for generating the digest information of video contents. SOLUTION: The recording and reproducing device is provided with a detection section for detecting a specific image contained in recorded and held video contents, and a digest information generating section for extracting video contents as a digest video image, while the specific image is detected by the detection section. Namely, the specific image or specific BGM contained in recorded and held video contents is detected, this is regarded as feature information attached to a highlight scene, and information on a portion in the video contents accompanied with the specific image or BGM is generated.
