PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus in which useless turning-on of a cold-cathode tube is reduced to prolong a service life and which can be set in accordance with user's frequency or time of use. SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus comprising a cold-cathode tube 6a as a light source for reading includes: a timer with which a lighting-off delay time can be set; a clock timer for setting a lighting-on time zone in which ON of the light source for reading is held; and a control means 1 for holding lighting-on of the cold-cathode tube 6a for reading in the lighting-on time zone set by the clock timer, turning on the cold-cathode tube 6a by detecting start of image reading, starting the timer for each time of reading, holding lighting-on until the timer counts the lighting-off delay time and, on the other hand, turning off the cold-cathode tube at a time point when the lighting-off delay time is counted.
