PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel antibacterial agent which does not discolor at processing, is excellent in processibility and shelf stability and exerts a high antibacterial property, and a highly safe antibacterial resin composition which has a durable antibacterial effect, can be easily handled and does not easily discolor at use etc. SOLUTION: The antibacterial agent comprises a metal phosphonate formed from a phosphonic acid compound having an aromatic ring, preferably phenyl phosphonic acid, and an antibacterial metal ion, preferably silver ion, copper ion or zinc ion.
