PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device improved in emission efficiency and secured in lighting by appropriately setting a quiscent time. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device generating two driving signals with phases different from each other at angles of 180 degrees to be added to a rare gas discharge lamp through a transformer T1 is equipped with a first control circuit 11 defining frequencies of the driving signals, a second control circuit 12 for setting a downtime when the two control signals with the different phases outputted from the first control circuit 11 are turned off simultaneously, and first and second switching elements supplied with outputs of the second control circuit and supplying the driving signals to the transformer.
