PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display device with which high quality video with reduced crosstalk and reduced illumination unevenness can be obtained at a low cost. SOLUTION: The video display device having one display screen capable of displaying videos coping with a plurality of observers respectively includes an illumination means for emitting a first luminous flux and a second luminous flux respectively in at least two different directions in time division, and a transmission type display element capable of displaying a first video making the first luminous flux emitted from the illumination means illumination light and a second video making the second luminous flux illumination light. The illumination means includes a first light source 20 for emitting the first luminous flux, a second light source 25 for emitting the second luminous flux, a first light guide plate 21 for emitting the first luminous flux emitted from the first light source 20 only in the direction of the first observer and a second light guide plate 22 for emitting the second luminous flux emitted from the second light source 25 only in the direction of the second observer.
