PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance storage density of spent fuel and to effectively utilize decay heat of the spent fuel. SOLUTION: This storage system is equipped with a plurality of airtight containers 2 for storing therein the spent fuel 7, cooling tubes 3 placed in the airtight containers 2, respectively, groups of solid particles 4 put in the airtight containers 2 to conduct decay heat of the spent fuel 7 to the cooling tubes 3, a pump means for making a cooling fluid 5 forcibly flow through the cooling tubes 3, and a heat utilization system for utilizing heat energy conducted from the spent fuel 7 and possessed by the cooling fluid 5.
