PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating ballast water capable of carrying out extinction treatment of a microbe in the ballast water simply and in a short time, and making a call at any harbor without polluting the environment. SOLUTION: The ballast water in a ship is removed through a deliver pipe, the ballast water in the deliver pipe is irradiated with an ultrasonic wave (preferably 28 to 200 KHz) and the microbe present in the ballast water is destroyed to be extinct by a shock wave of the ultrasonic wave generated in water. In the method for treating the ballast water, it is also preferable to load and mix hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, or the like, beforehand, and irradiate the ultrasonic wave into the water. A large number of ultrasonic vibrators are mounted on the pipe wall of a square or a circular ballast water deliver pipe in linear arrangement or plane arrangement, the ballast water containing the microbe in the deliver pipe is introduced and the ballast water in the deliver pipe is irradiated with the ultrasonic wave, thus a large amount of ballast water can be treated in a short time.
