PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To excellently feed papers without requiring manual adjustment in regard to a paper feeding device having a means for reducing resisting force between sheets when separating the sheets one by one. SOLUTION: The paper feeding device 1 has a roll 2 to be brought in pressure-contact with the piled sheets S, a driving means for driving the roll 2 for rotation, a resisting force reducing means for reducing resisting force between the sheets when separating the sheets S one by one with the roll 2 driven for rotation, a torque limiting means for hindering transmission of the torque exceeding the predetermined value to the roll 2, and a control means for reducing the resisting force with the resisting force reducing means when the torque limiting means starts to hinder transmission of the torque exceeding the predetermined value. When the torque to be transmitted to the roll 2 reaches the predetermined value, the torque limiting means starts to hinder transmission of the torque.
