This patent describes a special toothbrush made with bristles of optical fibers that conducts ultra violet germicidal light by total internal reflection. The germicidal light must be directed from a low angle, usually greater than 43 degrees from the normal, so that it will result in total internal reflection of the light so all the bristles are sterilized from top to bottom. The germicidal light can come from an ultra violet germicidal lamp---or-- groups of ultra violet germicidal light emitting diodes. (LED's)----or-groups of ultra violet germicidal micro lasers. There is a timer and off/on switch. The time should be about 20 minutes because the bristles must dry out before the germicidal effect will take place. The on/off switch is used to turn the light on after the door is closed and sealed to prevent light from escaping. The light will not turn on unless the door is closed and sealed. This is a safety feature that is necessary because germicidal light is detrimental to the eyes. Because the outer bristles of a toothbrush tend to bend out after considerab le use, it is best to have the light come from both sides to accommodate this bending of the bristles. Opening at the bottom to allow water to escape because the toothbrush will b e wet after use.
