PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus, capable of realizing easy-to-see image display for both television images and computer images by variably controlling the light emission intensity of a back light source, in response to switching of a display mode and capable of reducing power consumption. SOLUTION: In the image display apparatus constituted so as to switch the mode for displaying television images and the mode for displaying computer images, the light emission luminance (light emission intensity) of the backlight source 16 is variably controlled, in response to a mode switching instruction to obtain suitable screen luminance in each mode.
